The Real Deal with Rum
How it’s made: Rum is made from molasses and water or cane juice and water. The mixture is fermented with yeast for a period ranging from one day to up to several weeks, distilled then sometimes aged in a barrel. There are hundreds of different ways to create rum to add different hues of flavors and tastes. (Though, no one does it quite like the Captain.)
How it’s classified: The different styles of making rum produces different flavors of rum which include:
- White Rum – Light-bodied, clear, good for blending
- Gold Rum – Medium-bodied, smooth, mellow, often referred to as Amber Rum
- Dark Rum – Full-bodied, rich, caramel-dominated, good for drinking on the rocks
- Spiced Rum – White, Gold or Dark rums infused with spices or fresh fruit
- Añejo and Age-Dated Rum – Specially made batches that are often mixtures of multiple rums
Where it comes from: The Caribbean produces the most rum in the world. Barbados, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Haiti, Martinique, Puerto Rico, Trinidad, and The Virgin Islands are all very well-known for their rum production. Central and South American come in a close second with Guatemala, Nicaragua, Brazil and Venezuela being other famous rum producing countries.
Why the Caribbean and Rum go together: Because rum comes from molasses that comes from sugar, the Caribbean is an ideal location for rum production. The islands in the Caribbean have the perfect climate for growing sugar cane.
Who discovered Rum: It’s hard to say who first discovered rum, but sugar mill operators noticed that molasses when mixed with water and left in the sun would fermet. They started distilling the rum and drinking it sometime in the 1650s. They called it “Kill Devil” — for one of two reasons: it was supposed to be a cure all or because it gave very bad hangovers. They eventually started called it rumbullion which was eventually shorted to RUM.
