Tampa is vibrant city with lots to draw both tourists and residents to the area. Home to Busch Gardens, Adventure Island, the Lowry Park Zoo, and more, there’s always something to do here. Naturally, some neighborhoods are less dangerous than others, but there are lots of great options available throughout the city. Here are the safest neighborhoods in Tampa.
Westchase
Westchase is west of Citrus Park and enjoys a similarly low crime profile. Residents in this affluent area had an average household income of $106,532 as of 2010. In nicer areas like this where crime is low on average, police often see brief rashes of crime from criminals looking for homes with higher value items. Since even the safest areas fall prey to crime occasionally, it’s a good idea to have a home security system installed for safety. Westchase is slightly more dangerous than Citrus Park in regards to weather, falling primarily in level D and E evacuation areas.
New Tampa
Minor cases of theft occur in New Tampa, but the area has a relatively low crime rate with very few violent crimes. One of the most appealing aspects of this area is its location. New Tampa is far enough inland to avoid major damage from hurricanes and flooding. It also doesn’t fall into one of Tampa’s evacuation zones. New Tampa is also well north of the recent rash of sinkholes discovered in the area.
Channelside
Entertainment and dining are prominent features of the Channelside area, making it a popular Tampa neighborhood. This is also one of the closer neighborhoods to the activity and excitement of downtown. The proximity to downtown does give this area a slightly higher crime rate, however. Parts of Channelside are also in level B evacuation areas, making them only the second area to face evacuation in a hurricane. On average, a hurricane impacts the city every 2.07 years, with about 12.82 years between direct hits, making this a relatively common threat for residents.
Overall, Tampa is a great choice if you’re looking for a growing city with affordable housing. The cost of living is 12.3% lower than the national average, and there’s lots to love in this tropical area. In which of these neighborhoods would you prefer to reside?
